A Community-Driven Partnership
The South Haven Leadership Accelerator is a seven-month program designed to equip emerging and established leaders with the skills and insights needed to transform their organizations and communities. According to Jeremy Burleson, LMC’s Associate Dean of the South Haven Campus and Select Academic Programs, the program’s success is a direct result of its strategic partnerships.
“The Leadership Accelerator is a transformative initiative that leverages the unique resources of Lake Michigan College and key community partners,” Burleson states. “The partnership with the South Haven Regional Business Hub, the Southwest Michigan Regional Chamber of Commerce, The Purpose Partners, and the South Haven Area Community Foundation ensures our curriculum is rooted in the real-world needs of the region.”
Hosted at Lake Michigan College’s South Haven Campus, the program provides a rigorous curriculum that blends academic principles with practical, hands-on application. “It’s an investment in your personal and professional growth, designed to build a new generation of forward-thinking leaders,” notes Burleson. “LMC provides state-of-the-art facilities and direct access to faculty, staff, and local leaders who bring expertise in leadership, communication, critical thinking, and organizational development.”
This integration ensures participants develop not only technical leadership competencies—such as collaborative decision making, emotional intelligence, and crucial conversations—but also a deep understanding of community engagement and regional challenges. In turn, these skills ripple outward, empowering graduates to strengthen their organizations and contribute to lasting impact in Michigan’s Great Southwest.

Why Leadership, Why Now?
Southwest Michigan is at a critical juncture, and the need for strong leadership has never been more urgent. This program directly addresses the pressing challenges facing our region. Michael Neiss, Owner of Michael T. Neiss & Associates and founding Board Member of the South Haven Regional Business Hub emphasizes that leadership is about more than just driving results.
“Leadership is a noble calling, one that builds bridges of trust, lights the path for others to follow, and turns organizations into catalysts for a better world,” Neiss says.
Niess is confident the Leadership Accelerators programming will provide the tools to navigate a rapidly changing landscape.
Why be a leader?
In a world defined by constant change, simply having a job isn’t enough. True career fulfillment and community impact come from the courage to lead. Leadership is not a title; it is a skill set that benefits every aspect of your life—your work, your personal growth, and the wellbeing of your community. The ability to inspire, innovate, and adapt is more than an asset; it’s a necessity.
This program is your opportunity to build that foundation and potentially inspire others to grow their skills as well.
8 Reasons We Need Leaders
- Economic Changes: Our region is facing a time of uncertainty and change, requiring leaders with the agility and resilience to navigate shifts in the economy. Leading change will be a critical skill.
- Scaling Businesses: Entrepreneurs moving from ‘doing it all themselves’ to leading teams need a new skillset focused on vision, delegation, and culture-building.
- Generational Change: With many current leaders nearing retirement, the next generation must be prepared to step up and guide organizations forward.
- Workforce Expectations: Younger employees expect purpose and development. Leaders must know how to meet these expectations to attract and retain top talent.
- Competitive Advantage: Companies led by skilled leaders consistently outperform their peers in productivity, innovation, and employee engagement.
- Community Resilience: Strong leadership is essential for helping organizations and communities adapt to disruption, whether from economic shifts, new technology like AI, or public health crises.
- Immediate ROI: Participants can immediately apply tools like CliftonStrengths, radical candor, and problem-solving frameworks to their current business challenges, seeing a quick return on their investment.
- Momentum & Visibility: This is the Hub’s first Accelerator; those who step in now will be recognized as founding participants and regional trailblazers.
A Vision for the Future
The long-term vision for the Leadership Accelerator, as shared by Burleson, is to establish a continuous pipeline of skilled leaders dedicated to the economic and civic growth of Southwest Michigan. The program is designed to be adaptable, with each cohort and partnership strengthening its curriculum and expanding its influence.
“Ultimately, the goal is to build a self-sustaining ecosystem of leaders who support one another, foster collaboration, and commit to building a more resilient and inclusive community,” Burleson concludes. “Over time, the Leadership Accelerator won’t just develop leaders—it will define what leadership looks like in Michigan’s Great Southwest.”
