Join a Peer Group and Boost Your Business Success

Is a Peer Group Right for Me?

Peer groups offer a unique opportunity to connect with like-minded business leaders and gain invaluable insights. Imagine having a trusted sounding board where you can share your successes, discuss your challenges, and learn from the experiences of others. Sound helpful?

How does a peer group work?

“Typically, peer groups are facilitated by experienced professionals who guide discussions on a range of topics, from sales and marketing to finance and human resources,” says Steven Cummings, President of SPC Consulting, and South Haven Regional Business Hub Peer+Plus Group Chair. “Members share their experiences, learn about emerging trends, and collaborate on solutions to common problems.”

“For example, one of our members recently faced a significant drop in sales,” Cummings says. “By sharing the situation with the group, they were able to identify several underlying issues, including outdated marketing strategies and a need to improve customer service. With the support and guidance of their peers, they implemented a new marketing plan and made changes to their customer service processes, resulting in a significant increase in sales within a few months.”

“The feedback from my peer CEOs, helpfulness of my Chair, insights from the speakers – and overall accountability – help make me a better leader.”

Now consider this:

Does your business deal with sales, employees, business processes, financials, or legal challenges (like above)?

If so, you can rest assured that being part of a peer group will provide you with invaluable support and insights. Peer groups bring together business leaders from a wide range of industries. While these leaders may compete in different markets, they share a common goal: to grow and succeed. Whether you’re in technology, sales, manufacturing, or any other field, there’s a peer group that can benefit you.

According to Cummings, “The concept is simple but powerful. Each leader brings their own unique skills and experience to the table,” he says. “By sharing ideas and perspectives, we can learn from one another and discover new ways to improve our businesses. Together, we can achieve more than we could alone.”

“My Vistage group always checks that your ‘whole self’ is showing up and that you’re living the same values at home as you are at the office. I’ve come to see that when a company is authentically living its purpose, your resolve to stay the course will be tested daily—but that’s something to run to, not run from.”

How Does a Peer Group Work?

Peer groups are typically led by a seasoned executive who is trained in facilitating group discussions. They meet regularly to:

  • Share business updates: Discuss the current state of your business, including its strengths, weaknesses, and challenges.
  • Learn together: Explore new concepts and trends such as AI, cybersecurity, marketing, finance, human resources, and legal compliance.
  • Solve problems and seize opportunities: Work together to address specific challenges or capitalize on new opportunities.

The problem-solving process involves:

  • Breaking down the problem: Identifying the key issues and their root causes.
  • Reviewing past actions: Assessing what has already been done to address the problem.
  • Generating solutions: Brainstorming ideas and considering potential solutions, including metrics, staffing, and other factors.
  • Committing to action: Developing a clear plan of action and committing to implementing it.
  • Reporting back: Sharing progress and outcomes with the group at future meetings.

“This process helps ensure accountability and keeps leaders focused on making progress,” notes Cummings.

“Research shows that peer groups can have a significant impact on business success,” he says. “For example, during the COVID-19 pandemic, companies that participated in peer groups saw an average growth of 4.7%, while those that didn’t saw an average decline of 4.8% (based on D&B data for similar-sized companies). This means that businesses in peer groups outperformed their competitors by nearly 10%.”
